Sixth Annual Summer School for Advanced Islamic Studies

Since 2015, EDEP's Summer School for Advanced Islamic Studies has been uniting students of sacred knowledge with some of the most eminent scholars of our time. The intensive is hosted at EDEP Fatih's historic building, directly adjacent to the Hırka-i Şerif Mosque, which houses the cloak (hırka) of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.

Previous programs offered advanced level seminars in the fields of Logic, Kalām, Ḥadīth, Fiqh, Uṣūl al-fiqh and Sufism, as well as topical seminars on topics including Ottoman political thought, Islamic education, and contemporary problems in theology. Past teachers have included Dr. Recep Şentürk, Dr. Bilal Aybakan, Dr. Murteza Bedir, Dr. Ahmad Snobar, Dr. Mahmud al-Misri, Dr. Amjad Rasheed, Dr. Hamza Bekri, Sh. Maşuk Yamaç, Sh. Talha Hakan Alp, and Sh. Salih al-Ghursi. While courses are taught exclusively in classical Arabic and focus on classical texts, they are also enriched by the integration of discussion-based seminars on contemporary topics.

Participants in the summer intensive have come from countries all over the world to attend the program, including the United States, Canada, England, Germany, Jordan, and Turkey. Courses are held five days a week; and, on the weekends, optional cultural and historical excursions are organized to enhance the participants’ familiarity with Turkish history and culture. Some of the previous sites visited include İSAM (the Center for Islamic Studies), the Valide-i Atik Medrese, and the Özbekler Tekke.

EDEP sponsors the majority of program costs. However, students pay a nominal fee of $500 USD for the four-week program, payable upon acceptance to the program. EDEP also provides housing and meals for all students, but families planning to stay together will be required to make their own housing arrangements.

The 2020 Intensive is a four week program, beginning June 29th and ending July 24th. Students should plan to arrive a few days before the start date, to become acclimated and begin classes on Monday, June 29th. We invite students who are fluent in Arabic and have studied Islamic studies in an Arabic environment up to an intermediate level to apply. Applications must be submitted online and are due by March 30th, 2020, although students are urged to apply as soon as possible, since decisions will be made on a rolling basis.
