Sixth Annual Summer School for Advanced Islamic Studies

Since 2015, EDEP's Summer School for Advanced Islamic Studies has been uniting students of sacred knowledge with some of the most eminent scholars of our time. In past years, the intensive has been hosted in Istanbul. However, in light of the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and the extreme limitations on international travel, which will likely remain in place to some degree throughout the summer, the Sixth Annual Summer School for Advanced Islamic Studies program will be held online.

Previous programs offered advanced level seminars in the fields of Logic, Kalām, Ḥadīth, Fiqh, Uṣūl al-fiqh and Sufism, as well as topical seminars on topics including Ottoman political thought, Islamic education, and contemporary problems in theology. Past teachers have included Dr. Recep Şentürk, Dr. Bilal Aybakan, Dr. Murteza Bedir, Dr. Ahmad Snobar, Dr. Mahmud al-Misri, Dr. Amjad Rasheed, Dr. Hamza Bekri, Sh. Maşuk Yamaç, Sh. Talha Hakan Alp, and Sh. Salih al-Ghursi. While courses are taught exclusively in classical Arabic and focus on classical texts, they are also enriched by the integration of discussion-based seminars on contemporary topics.

The 2020 Intensive will be four weeks long, beginning June 29th and ending July 24th. It will be divided into two-week modules. In the first two-week module, the courses will be kal¬am, hadith (3x/week), and a course offered by Dr. Recep Şentürk (2x/week). In the second two-week module, the courses will be fiqh and usul al-fiqh. The language of study will be Arabic, though some seminars may be held in English. Classes will be held five days a week, with additional seminars by visiting scholars on Saturdays. Two courses will be offered per day, each will be 1.5 hours long, and they will be conducted from 5 pm – 8:30 pm, Turkish time (10 am – 1:30 pm EST; 7 am – 10:30 am PST).

Instead of $500, the cost of the program will be $300, payable upon acceptance to the program. The purpose of this fee is to give our teachers something for their time and effort.

We invite students who are fluent in Arabic and have studied Islamic studies in an Arabic environment up to an intermediate level to apply. The application deadline has been extended to May 18th, 2020.
