Summer School for Advanced Islamic Studies
EDEP and Ibn Haldun School of Islamic Studies will be organizing the Summer School for Advanced Islamic Studies this year. The program will bring students of knowledge together with prominent Islamic scholars. It will be hosted in Istanbul, at EDEP’s Fatih branch, in a complex directly adjacent to the Hırka-i Şerif Mosque. This mosque houses the cloak (khirqa) of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, the guardians of which once lived in EDEP’s historic building. Here, in an atmosphere brimming with historical and religious significance, we offer students the opportunity to study Islamic sciences with classically trained scholars of the highest caliber.
Our program offers advanced level seminars in the fields of Tafsir, Ḥadīth, Kalām, Fiqh, Uṣūl al-fiqh, and Tasawwuf, as well as seminars such as Ottoman political thought and contemporary problems in theology. Our teachers are Dr. Recep Şentürk, Dr. Bilal Aybakan, Dr. İhsan Kahveci, Dr. Ahmet Murat Özel, Dr. İbrahim Özdemir, Dr. Ahmad Snobar, Dr. Hamza Bekri and Sh. Salih al-Ghursi. While courses are taught exclusively in Arabic and focused on classical texts, they are also enriched by the integration of discussion-based seminars on contemporary topics.
Courses are held five days a week, and optional cultural and historical excursions are organized on the weekends to enhance the participants’ familiarity with Turkish history and culture. EDEP and IHU School of Islamic Studies sponsor the majority of program costs. However, students pay a nominal fee of $500 USD for the four-week program, payable upon acceptance into the program.
The 2019 Intensive is a four-week program, beginning July 15th and ending August 9th, 2019. We invite students who are fluent in Arabic and have studied the Islamic studies in an Arabic environment at an intermediate level to apply. Applications must be submitted online and are due by April 15th, 2019, although students are urged to apply as soon as possible as decisions will be made on a rolling basis.
